Learning Objectives and Time      Activities

     Step One: Take Photos

Learners will use their own smart phones or ipads provided by the school to take photos of street signs around the school neighbourhood. The photos will be shared with the teacher by email or text message. Other students, volunteers or assistants can help with this process, if needed. Once the photos are shared, the teacher will upload examples of each sign to the wiki. (See Student View Page). There, the students can read the signs as they view the photos. With the photos numbered, the teacher can provide a numbered worksheet for learners to copy the text from the signs. Most will copy.

Back in the classroom, learners can practice the new words by matching text with photos, drawing lines to match signs and text on worksheets, copying words, filling in missing letters and writing text removed from signs.

In a follow-up activity, students can be shown a sign and they must pick out the word from a group of words on flashcards or on a paper, demonstrating reading ability.

Assessments

Learners can be assessed in reading by using any of the above matching activities or by picking up flashcards to determine how well the new words were learned. The aligned competency (Getting information from short, simple texts) can be included in the task. To assess how well the learners enjoyed the module, a happy face, neutral face and sad face scale can be used to obtain feedback.
